I came across a comment that insulted me a bit. I practice Witchcraft and take my practice VERY seriously. But this comment hurt me in the worst way.
Witchcraft has been practiced for centuries by both men and women...to the same degree, they use a power that exists (energy) on equal levels (i.e. one higher than the other). Just like magic has no colors (black or white), neither does magic exist on any levels that is better or "higher" than the other. It exists in the same way electrical energy exists. None higher or more powerful than the other.
This person (let's call them L.G.) comments: "I don't do "witchcraft" or so-called "low magic." " Excuse Me??!!?? "Low Magic"?? I find it a shitty thing to call a practice I take seriouly to be referred to as "Low Magic". It's like saying "I'm too good to practice Witchcraft so I'll insult it and everyone who practices it by referring to it as "Low" as it's not important". That's bullshit. I know numerous people who would agree with me...many of them Traditional Witches, not Wiccans.
This L.G. person is a practicing Wiccan, so this just insults me more. I am NOT a Wiccan, and for a Wiccan (whose religion was created only roughly about 50-60 years ago) to refer to my practices as "Low" is about as insulting as my saying "Wicca is not a valid religion" (a comment I would never say to another Wiccan, as I have respect some Wiccans, who have earned that respect).
I'm sorry, it just pisses me off to hear someone with an attitude of "Higher and mightier than thou" make such an outrageous claim (though not the first I've heard of this, also I have many issues with this L.G. person, and many of their comments).
Just a vent.
Hey! Well, I just had to comment here. Although that person's comment is infuriating indeed, Low Magic is not that.
ReplyDeleteLow and High Magic are classifications of the *methods* of Magic. Witchcraft deals with Low Magic not in the sense of lesser or lowly but in the sense of "earthly", physical, non-theurgical (as in the structure of planes of existence the "bottom" plane is the physical world) as opposed to i.e. Ceremonial systems which are not Witchcraft and utilize High Magic. That is methods of theurgy, working with Gods and spirits and not for "earthly" goals like protection, blessings etc but for more "spiritual" ones like invocation and evocation, astral travel and who-knows.
It's really not a discriminatory issue, it's merely a categorization of the magical methods based on which plane they influence mostly.
