I've encountered a blog post promoting Vegetarianism. I'm
not a big meat eater, but I'm not a big fan of vegetarianism either. (I'll get
this out of the way. I don't like the taste of beef, therefore I only eat
Chicken and some pork...there, that's out of the way)
Now, this individual...who goes by the screen name 'Harm
None' (hmph...humerous name if I say so myself, yet another person taking the
'Wiccan Rede' out of context) posts an article from the "New York Times
News Service" that seems to describe the effect of one's diet on good
health. It asks the question" Is the human body better suited to a
vegetarian diet...?"
It goes on to describe the human anatomy as not being suited
for the consumption of meat. They say that the human teeth are not suited for
comsumption of meat due to the lack of "sharp...teeth" (uh...do we
not have canines for the very reason of consuming meat? These are pointed teeth
designed to tear through meat). It goes on to describe how humans have no sharp
claws and have opposible thumbs more suited for picking fruit (right, like we
can't strangle an animal with our "opposible thumbs").
This entire article is one flaw after another. Due to humans
having "one-twentieth" the amount of stomach acid than those of
carnivores" apparently we were made only to eat plants. This is bull. The
reason we have "one-twentieth" is because we're OMNIVORES...not meant
to survive solely on meat as other CARNivores (nor are we meant to survive
solely on plants). Apparently this author forgot to mention the apparent
useless organs found in the body that were once used in the digestion of raw
meat...as well as the lack of sufficient nutrients, minerals, proteins etc in
plant life...it would take NUMEROUS amounts of plant life to add up to a small
amount found in a piece of meat.
The main point of this "response" is really in the
apparent "diseases" coming from meat eating. The problem with
diseases forming in the human body is not due to the eating of meat
itself...it's the amount of meat consumed. There's a reason there's this thing
called the "FOOD GUIDE". It's not some pretty colors and randomly
selected foods (Which includes meat). Nutritionists have studied foods to
determine how much of each provides daily amounts of nutrients humans need to
live healthy lives. If someone eats 5 hamburgers in one sitting, naturally
that's going to be bad for their system, creating all kinds of health problems,
due to the fat and salt contents, but eating one hamburger, once every, say,
2-3 weeks, is perfectly fine. Your body has the ability to process the hamburger,
dispose of the waste, and you're off and running again. It's not the fact that
you're eating meat that'd make you sick...it's HOW MUCH (and nutritionists have
been saying this for years...it's not what you eat, it's how much).
It's completely ridiculous how vegetarians seem to think
that their diet is so much better...meanwhile how many of them suffer health
problems...and I'm not talking about digestive and heart wise...there are MANY
vegetarians out there who suffer from (for example) Anemia...a condition of
low iron in the blood which can cause lack of energy, and fatigue as minor
symptoms (for more information on Anemia click link: http://www.healthscout.com/ency/68/112/main.html#SymptomsofAnemia)
I quote from iloveindia.com...meat "serves as a
fabulous source of high quality proteins, which a single vegetarian food is not
able to provide. It contains all the essential amino acids that the body
requires"
It states that red meat has high quantities of
iron..."100 grams of liver contains 6,000mcgm of iron, against 325mcgm in
100 grams of carrots". That's a difference of 5,675mcgm, and this makes my
point. By eating just a small amount of meat, you're gaining much more needed
minerals than you would if you were to eat the same amount of vegetables.
I'm not discounting the benefits of vegetables. Please don't
get me wrong...I just see an all vegetable diet being just as unhealthy for an
individual as an all meat diet. There's a reason humans eat both meat AND
vegetables. To remove one from the equation, doesn't make one any more
healthier.
To be a healthy person, eat your veggies, but eat your meat
too...it's not what you eat that can make you sick...it's how much.
