I used to be an advocate for stating that Wicca has little to nothing to do with spell work...however after much thought, and reading, I think I may rethink my position on this.
Thinking back...Gerald Gardner originally called his "religion" a "Witch Cult", and the practitioners "Wica's" (one "c" is intentional). There is much talk and practice of magic and spell work within the early days of his craft, so where is this information that Wicca has little to do with spell work, coming from?
I have nothing against many Wiccans choosing to move away from any relation with Witches, hell, I'm all for it, it saves me from having to correct newbies all the time that *Wiccans aren't Witches and not all Wiccans practice spells. (*insert high pitched imitation voice here).
Is there really that big a problem with Wiccans working spell work? Ok, maybe we need a new name for such work (I myself find it difficult to take myself seriously sometimes, when I state that I work spells, for the image of the Queen in "Snow White" pops into my head stating "Now...to begin thy magic spell!!")
I don't know, maybe I'm just tired of seeing the same persons over and over blatantly reiterating "Wiccans don't do spell work". Ok, maybe YOU don't do spells, but I'm almost positive Gerald Gardner did, AND Raymond Buckland, AND Doreen Valiente (pioneers in Wicca). If your groups decided to omit the workings of spells within your groups, that's perfectly fine, but I do know that there are NUMEROUS Wiccans out there who DO work spells, and have no problem with it.
I don't know, just a useless rant on a topic that just popped into my head. Really, is it so bad to do spells and be a Wiccan?? Really, what's wrong with it?
