Ok, I'll jump on the bandwagon for this one.
I don't necessarily see this article as "shocking" as the author suggests. Perhaps because this 10 year old doesn't live in the same society we do, so it's a unique situation.
If this 10 year old were living, say in the United States or Canada, it would be both sickening and shocking, because it would indicate either poor supervision on part of the parent, and the child had sex with another child (or even someone older), OR...parental abuse leading to pregnancy.
However, this situation is unique. This child comes from an indigenous tribe, and the rules are a little different. In indigenous tribes, sex is not considered a power trip, and sex can be considered sacred. Once a child has her first menstruation, many tribes can consider her mature enough for beginning a family. In this case, the tribe may be polygamist, in which the girls may choose their husbands.
It's interesting how in just 100 years how minds and morals have changed. Almost 100 years ago, it was acceptable for a young woman of 14 to go off and get married and have children of their own. I'm in no way condoning any of this, so don't get me wrong, but I think people are jumping the gun on a situation they have no idea about. This 10 year old does NOT live in the same society as we do with the same social laws and social morals we do. It's pushing our beliefs on them again, instead of researching the way of life for these people. Just because their ways are different from ours does NOT necessarily make them wrong. Our ways could be considered just as barbaric to them, but no one thinks about that.
