The athame. A black,
double-edged, blunt dagger used to direct energy, usually when casting and
closing a circle. It's associated with masculine energy, as it is a phallic
symbol. It is also associated with Fire and the God, but sometimes it is
associated with Air (this depends on the practitioner). Generally, because it
is a tool of energy direction, it is not used to cut physical things, therefore
one would also possess a traditional Boline, which is used for cutting things
like cords, herbs, etc.
Traditionally the Athame is a
black handled metal knife, however as times have changed, the athame can also
be found to be made of other materials, including wood and bone. It is not difficult
to make your own using a piece of wood in your desired thickness, and a dremmel
tool (or an experienced wood carver). You simply carve or grind away the
unnecessary wood, leaving whatever shape you desire your athame to be (be it an
amateurish design, OR quite intricate and accurate as you can). All this is up
to you. You can then decorate it as you see fit, consecrate it, then use it
when needed.
