Cancelled "44 Days"

Well, I've done it. I've given up on my 44 Days posts. Why, oh why??? Do you ask?? Well, to begin with they didn't really offer much to put in a blog post (honestly, merely a picture of a natural scene????)

Secondly, the rest don't offer much either. I don't know of any pagan/witchy artwork (I'm not one for art anyways); I don't believe in "faeries" or nature spirits, I don't use runes, I'm hardly a gardener (I prefer nature grow the plants herself, without my interfering), I have posts on my altar, and I don't advertise my spells.

I find the remaining "Days" on this "44 Day" list to not be contributory to my blog.

Time for bigger and better things on this blog

44 Days of Witchery: Day 31 - Something That I Think People Who Don't Know Much About Paganism/Witchcraft Should Know

I wasn't going to do anymore, but I think this will be my last one, because I think it's a good one.

Something that I think people who don't know much about Paganism/Witchcraft should know
...the answer to this one can depend on the type of person.

Type #1 - The Over-Religious Closed-Minded
...It's nothing like you think it is. If I had a dollar for every time I (or any Pagan in general) was called a Satanist, Devil Worshiper, whatever, I'd probably have enough to buy a new car (or a house or something REALLY expensive).

It's about as easy to worship the Devil as a Pagan Witch as it is for Christians to worship the Greek Hades. Christians believe "Hades" to be a "False God" (even though he is part of a recognized, and respected ancient civilization, who contributed to a LOT of things we take for granted these days, including the english language). How is it that it's ok for Christians to say they don't believe in Hades, yet don't accept that Pagans and Witches don't believe in THEIR Devil? It's a hypocritical attitude.

No...we don't worship your Devil. One has to believe in a deity to worship it, otherwise it's just going through motions, and that just looks plain stupid. I have no need for supernatural boogey-men in my life. I have real problems to deal with that are tangible and recognizable...I don't have time to worship nonsense.

Type #2 - The "Logical" Closed-Minded
...It's nothing like you think it is. It's hardly the tv fiction you see every night on whatever the latest fad tv station there is these days (I don't watch much tv anymore, too much teeny-drama BS).

I could explain the details to you, but you...like the over-religious closed minded, you like to sit there with your fingers in your ears crying "LA LA LA LA LA" not listening to a single word I say...and I just don't have the energy to waste.

Type #3 - Fantastical Fanatics
...It's nothing like you think it is. It's not like tv. You can't wave your hand and electricity flows from your hands or wands. You can't just rhyme off words from a book and suddenly, in a poof of smoke what you're desiring appears. And you MOST DEFINITELY cannot transform into a mermaid, vampire, werewolf or other fantastical creature by uttering a spell. You need to stop living in a fairy tale dream and come into reality and understand that Witchcraft and Magic are subtle things.

There are lots of other things I could say, but...what would be the point...none of them are going to listen to it anyway.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 28 - Water Element

Water

Water is a feminine energy and highly connected with the aspects of the Goddess. Used for healing, cleansing and purification, water is related to the West and associated with passion and emotions. Consecrated (holy) water is just regular water with salt added to it, and usually a blessing or invocation is said above it. In covens, such water is used to consecrate the circle and all the tools within it. As you may expect, water is associated with the color blue, and the Tarot suit of Cups cards.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 27 - A Witchy I-Want-It-Now Pic

This is MY...Witchy Gotta have it now. For perhaps my whole life I've ALWAYS wanted a crystal ball. Regardless of if I use it or not, I want one.

I've read about how to gaze, I've even made my own "imitation" crystal ball with a glass globe I had from my wedding (it was one of the table decorations).

With a crystal ball, I'd even just plain hold it. My only problem is I don't want one that's permanently mounted to a stand. I want to be able to hold the orb in my hands. I want to get a feel for it, examine every inch of it's surface, gaze intently beneath it's surface.

Ordering one online is a little worrisome for me. I can't tell a 4mm ball from a 40mm ball form a 400mm ball. Knowing my luck I'd end up ordering this teeny little crystal ball, thinking I've ordered this beautiful large ball.

I know where I can get a nice sized "crystal" ball, but I'm worried that it's permanently mounted. Meh, oh well. I suppose I should get what I can get...at least for the moment.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 25 - How do your close ones feel about your Witchy path? Do they know? Why or why not?

How do your close ones feel about your Witchy path? Do they know? Why or why not?

There are very few who actually know I'm a Witch. I'm very choosy of who I tell.

Those who KNOW I'm a Witch, how they feel is different for each person. My husband chooses to remain oblivious. He knows, but doesn't say anything about it. My mother somewhat knows...she stumbled upon my books, and only told me to be careful. My mother is the type to allow me to make my own choices, regardless of how it makes her feel. She may not be happy, but she knows I'm an adult and my choices are mine. In all honesty I don't think she knows what it is I actually do. I think she somewhat (innocently but ignorantly, lol) thinks it's the stereotypical Witchcraft portrayed by the biased or media. She too doesn't really care. She's not one of these crazies who think I'm into Devil worship, nor any kind of fundamentalist. She just wants me to be careful...and I don't do anything that I don't feel comfortable with.

My best friend is rather supportive of me and my choice in beliefs, but like the other two, she too doesn't really care. And in all honesty, I think it's best this way. It's better to have them not care about what I do, then have their noses constantly in my practices and telling me I'm going to hell on a daily basis. I have a rather big mouth, and not afraid to state my opinion, and I could sense my not being quiet should someone confront me about it. I would rather though, keep things peaceful, hence why I'm very choosy of who I tell.

Those I definitely WON'T tell I'm a Witch would have to be my husband's grandparents. His grandfather is a former deacon for the Roman Catholic Church. They're kind of a little too into their religion (I say this because when my younger sister-in-law told them she was pregnant (and not married), they told her it was still a sin. Nice, eh?). I just don't have enough energy to participate in a constant debate with them. And my father-in-law (also a Catholic), also is not shy with his opinion, and can get quite loud when trying to get his point across, so he too I will NOT tell. I just don't have the energy to get into verbal confrontations about my beliefs and why someone else thinks it's wrong simply because they don't agree with it. I'll keep my beliefs to myself, unless I am SURE I can trust them with such personal information, and know they'll be supportive.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 24 - Your Moon Sign

Your Moon Sign

MOON IN PISCES

Your emotions drive you. Whatever appeals to them attracts you (be it music, literature or poetry). You change your mind easily, and to some, this makes you unreliable. When the going gets tough, you (much too easily) get discouraged. You love change, routines seem to draw the life out of you. You are easygoing, but very shy. The Moon in Pisces has often been considered an unfavorable Sign. It is often attributed with causing glandular problems and obesity. On the outside you appear happy, but inside you are prone to being depressed. You may even lack a common sense of humor. This may lead to periods of indiscretion, lack of focus, and even dishonesty. At some time in your life hospitals, prisons or some other type of institution will play an important role. However this must be put into context with the rest of your horoscope (the Sun & Ascendant) before any definite conclusions can be drawn. Don't be discouraged, the Moon in Pisces can be one of the most appealing, sociable, entertaining and humorous of all the positions! You have a flair for music; composing, writing or just listening and appreciating. Whatever you do is emotional and romantic. You have very creative ideas, and a strong imagination to fuel them.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 23 - Your Favorite Candle

Ah, another gem from whoever decided to come up with these 44 days. My favorite candle. I don't really have a favorite candle. I love black candles, probably because they're so rare, and black has always been my favorite color (that and purple).

I have MANY candles. I'm always collecting candles, but I don't have any one in particular that's my favorite.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 21 - Your Favorite Scent

Your Favorite Scent

Hmm...my favorite scent. I have a lot of scents that I love. I love the smell of sage when it burns (unfortunately, my husband has breathing problems so burning things indoors is kind of a no-no (hence why I don't use incense anymore in ritual)). I generally burn sage outdoors when I am giving thanks to my Goddess.

I also love the smell of lavender. I love the sweet scent, when I catch a small whiff of it, I take a big sniff and I'm in heaven lol. I will sometimes burn an oil burner with a touch of lavender (hubby can handle a small amount of lavender oil burning, but not too much, and I tend to warm it when he's not home.

But I think my most favorite scent would have to be sweetgrass. I can always tell when it grows near or someone has just cut some...unfortunately I can never find it. Because it looks so much like other grasses AND grows amongst common lawn grasses, it can be quite difficult for me to find. I HAVE made attempts to find it, but all have come up unsuccessful.

Fortunately, I don't really have to harvest it on my own, considering I usually get a bundle of it from my mother at least once a year. I have a few braids of it in my room, in my chest of drawers, so it's not like I'm without. However, it too can only be burned outdoors, so as not to irritate my husband's chemically-induced Asthma.

Sometimes medical conditions can ruin a good thing. BUT...so long as he's comfortable, and not irritated, burning my favorite scents out doors is but a teeny sacrifice to ensure my husband remains healthy :)

44 Days of Witchery: Day 18 - Have you ever had any Paranormal experiences?

I suppose that would have to depend on the definition of "Paranormal" being used. When I hear the word "Paranormal" I think of ghostly encounters, UFO's and whatnot.

Sure, I've had odd experiences. I once saw a UFO when I was about 8 or 9 that traumatized me. As an adult, I now know what it actually was, but at the time I was extremely terrified to the point of panic because this "UFO" hovered over my uncle's vehicle...probably to mess with us. Knowing now what it was (it was a stealth airplane) I wouldn't think twice about it and would move on, but at the time it was a scary experience.

Another so-called "Paranormal" experience could be one time when my husband and I were sitting in our basement watching tv (our children had gone to bed), we heard a loud crash coming from our children's play area. I recognized it as their box of little legos. I went to investigate only to find the box of legos sitting in the middle of the spare bed that happened to be in the room; untouched. To this day I STILL cannot explain what we heard.

Those are perhaps the only thing close to a "paranormal" experience I've ever had.

44 Day's of Witchery: Day 17 - Picture of Nature: Fire Element

Sorry to say, but these "Picture of Nature" topics are really a waste of time and blog posts, considering you have doubles of "Earth, Air, Fire and Water, and you can just include these pictures in with the information on these elements.

I might just forgo these "Pictures of Nature" posts and combine them into one post, making this "40 Day's of Witchery", I mean, why make redundant posts if you don't have to??

44 Days of Witchery: Day 16 - Your Favorite Witchy Website(s)

Oh, I have many favorite Witchy websites. Most of them are forums. I love discussing the craft, and things of a crafting nature (as well as other topics).

I suppose this is meant to be a listing of my favorite websites, so here they are (some of these you can find on the sidebar should this post get lost in the neither-regions of blog world).

Sites I frequent most:
-Yahoo Answers: While this is more of a general Q & A, many people DO ask questions of a Witchy nature, and this is why I visit this site most.
-PaganSpace: A general all purpose Pagan website with lots of forum threads on VARIOUS topics of various natures.
-Cauldron of the Grey Witch: A site on "Grey Witchery". Though I don't subscribe to the idea that Witchery or magic is color coded...this forum discusses Witchcraft that is not always about healing and protection...general benevolent magic; it discusses ALL sorts of magic from yes positive magic, but also cursing, banishing and hexing.
-Real Pagan: Another forum on Paganism (though I don't agree on their idea of what REAL Wicca or Witchcraft is (their idea of true Witchcraft is Gardnerian-stemmed Witchcraft, and any initiatory bound practices)). I just go there for the topics, I don't normally participate in discussion.
-Book of Shadows Club and Pagan Crafter's Club: These are crafting groups found on WitchSchool.com. You don't have to be a part of the school to read the forums and get ideas on general Pagan crafts and books of shadows

Sites I don't frequent as much, but still find as good resources:

Books of Shadows
-Charmed Book of Shadows Replica Pages: This site provides the pages from the Charmed Book of Shadows, both with just the page borders (no words) as well as the original pages. So, if you want to either create your own Charmed replica OR make your OWN book look like the Charmed book with YOUR information, this would be the site to go to
-Sandgroan's Book of Shadows: Someone's created book of shadows that they have allowed public use of (so long as you say thank you). It has some really beautiful pages and interesting information.
-Carolina Dean Book of Shadows: Outline for a detailed book of shadows

General Sites
-The Firefly Academy: A very good online school of Wicca and Witchcraft (at least I recommend it)
-Hecate's Cauldron: One of the very good resource sites on the Goddess Hecate
-Theoi: Greek Mythology: Hekate: Another very good resource on the Goddess Hecate
-The Blessed Be: A generall all purpose site I refer to for altar setups, and oil recipes
-The Sacred Grove: A large information site
-Traditional Witchcraft FAQ: A site of frequently asked questions on one particular, unknown tradition of Traditional Witchcraft
-Witchvox: A Pagan networking site (find people, groups or shops in your area)
-Wicca: For the Rest of Us: A really well written site on the Wiccan religion (including other resources)
-Traditional Witch: A feisty (if not a touch overly arrogant) site of Traditional Witches. I choose not to participate because of their disrespect for those who are NOT Traditional Witches, however they DO have good information on Traditional Witchcraft practices.

I hope this is a good start for your own parusal of websites of a Witchy nature. Enjoy :)

44 Days of Witchery: Day 15 - Thoughts on an Afterlife

I can't say with 100% certainty that I know what's going to happen after we die. No one can. People can speculate, guess, even think they know for absolute certainty of what's going to happen, but in full blown truth, it's the biggest mystery in the universe.

What do I think happens when we die. I don't know. I would like to think we go to a place of rest and reflection from the life we lived. Reflect on lessons we've learned, and if we learned them right. After a time, when we've rested from such an arduous life, we can choose to come back and either 1) re-learn the lessons we didn't learn right and/or 2) learn new lessons. This can continue until you've learned everything there is to know as a human on this plane, and eventually "graduate" to another plane, go to the deities, what-have-you.

But this is just a guess, and a nice thought. There are lots of possibilities that could happen after we die. We could simply blink out of existence, with our lives meaning absolutely nothing. We could go to "heaven" or "hell". We could go to another planet and start all over again. Who knows. All we can do is guess.

I know, it's not really much of a thought, and is rather pessimistic of me. But I like to look at things from a logical standpoint...sometimes it can take away from the fun things in life, and leave the fun of a mystery, but sometimes I just need to be realistic and accept that we humans, though we like to think we know everything, we really know very, very little.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 14 - A Favorite Pagan Holiday that you Celebrate

I'm not like many of the conventional Pagans or even Wiccans out there. Because I'm not Wiccan, I won't celebrate all 8 of the Sabbats nor celebrate the "Wheel of the Year" for the simple fact that I only honor a Goddess and not a God, therefore the "Wheel of the Year" is obsolete in my practice.

I do celebrate one Sabbat...and it's perhaps the most common one for all Witches (if not familiar to them). I celebrate Samhain. Why only this one? Perhaps because I have the biggest draw to it. For as long as I can remember I have always loved Halloween. It has always been a magical time of year for me. It wasn't always about dressing up in costumes and getting candy, it just felt magical all on it's own (even when I couldn't articulate the feeling, as a child).

I remember one particular Halloween when I was a young child. It was back in the day when we could still wear our costumes and have a good ol' Halloween party at school (complete with costume parade in the Gym for the rest of the school). It was a stormy Halloween. Morning was very dark, and they day progressed as such, but the storm hadn't come in yet, so we were allowed to go out side. That day I had dressed as (surprise, surprise) a Witch. Black cloak, conical hat, the works. Going outside for recess, the winds had started to pick up, and I felt this magical feel in the air. I raised my arms in the air and asked for the winds to stir up higher and faster, as I looked up, watching the sky get darker and darker with black clouds (black enough to turn on the street lights (and this was probably at about 10:00-11:00am). I could just feel the power surging through the air as the storm got closer.

Naturally we all went in just before it started raining heavily and thundering. I will always remember that day as such a magical day. But it wasn't that day alone that began my love for Halloween. I don't think I have a particular reason that stemmed from childhood. The more I read about Halloween/Samhain and learn, the more I am intrigued and fascinated by the holiday, therefore I make it my mission to celebrate only Samhain. It's one night of the year when I can truly communicate with those I love, tell them how I miss them, wish they were around (physically), and tell them that I am sure they surround me in spirit.

Anyways, I'm rambling on about this holiday and why I love it, but I haven't even put in information about it.

Samhain (This information comes from my BoS and was provided by numerous people on a former forum. I am unsure as to where this actual information comes from)

For Wiccans, Samhain is the time of year when they say farewell to their God, as he dies (only to be reborn at Yule of the Goddess).

Samhain is a time of reflection, of looking back over the year and coming to terms with that which we have no control over: Death. Many feel that on this night, the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is at it's thinnest. It's a time to remember those who have gone before us, both those we've known, and those who were a part of our lives before we were created.

It is traditional on Samhain to leave a plate of food outside for the souls of the dead. A candle is placed in a window to guide them to the land of eternal summer. Burying apples in hard-packed earth "feeds" the passed ones on their journey.

Foods for this holiday: beets, turnips, apples, corn, nuts, gingerbread, cider, mulled wines, pumpkin, meat.

For a Samhain ritual that I participate in most often, please see the Samhain Ritual Evoking Hecate found on Hecate's Cauldron.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 13 - What are some "Witchy" books that influenced you?

I have several books on Witchcraft. Probably a LOT less than some people who have studied as long as I have. There are a couple of reasons for this: 1) I don't have a lot of money, and when I do have money, the local book store has a CRAPPY selection of reputable books (I waited several months for one book to finally come in) 2) I don't have a credit card because I don't have a job (well, I do stay home and take care of my children, but that doesn't qualify as a "job", even though I work hard, and have to take care of the house, which IS an expensive job, despite what the government thinks).

Anyways, I started out with Phyllis Curott's "WitchCrafting", but found it a more advanced type of book than a typical 101 type book I should have started with. I still can't seem to get past the first few chapters of her book. Not sure why. It's almost like trying to get through Raymond Buckland's Big Blue Book. While it has a lot of great information, it's still difficult for me to get passed maybe half the book (I get to the part on athame's and I can't seem to go further lol).

I still recommend Buckland's book; probably though not for beginners (even though it's supposed to be a beginner's book, I'd say when you're just getting passed the beginner's stuff, THEN go on to Buckland's...it's kind of an advanced beginners book).

Anyways, books that have influenced me, it asks, not books I have that I can't get passed, lol. I can't say I've gone wrong with any of Cunningham's books. Yeah, they're more geared towards Wicca, but I've found very valuable information from his books that I would say his books have had the biggest impact on my path.

Yeah, yeah, there are a lot of people who don't like him simply because of the publishing company he was with (talk about being found guilty merely by association), but I like his books because they don't baby the reader (as you see in many $RW books), nor do they get overly technical with the wording. Just down to earth basic-type wording ANYONE can understand and learn from. It took me forever to find his "Living Wicca" book, as, like I said above, the book stores around here suck. I was lucky enough to find his "Book of Shadows" far more quickly than "Living Wicca". But I'd say these books, as well as "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft" have had the biggest impact on my path. I often will try to re-read these books, and re-learn some things I have forgotten.

Then there are some PDF's I had found that I was reading (thanks to Scribd.com). Unfortunately I can't remember their titles at the moment (they're on my portable hard drive, and that's in another room lol). Regardless, they didn't have as big an impact on my practices as the ones I mentioned above.

Do I recommend them, and would I recommend them to people? Absolutely. Would I recommend them to Witches who aren't Wiccan? Again absolutely. I hate it when people who don't practice Wicca must put down all Wiccan books merely for being associated with Wicca (again, guilt by association). There IS good information in Wiccan books, you just have to get passed the Wiccan material, and just disregard it.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 11 - Witchy Tools: Oils

Oils aren't really a tool. A tool would be an object used on a regular basis in spell and ritual work. Oils generally are used to anoint and/or bless items or tools that one would use IN ritual or spell work, perhaps to boost their corresponding uses OR just to enhance your working. Oils can be used in a number of other ways as well. Many people will use them to anoint themselves in various pulse places to bring about the feeling of readiness when preparing for ritual, OR anoint themselves IN ritual at certain key points.

There are a number of different ways one can create their own oils. I myself have tried to make my own oils, but I'm an impatient person at times, and if it doesn't take as long as I want it to to make something, I tend to lose interest and end up forgetting (which is what happened with my Clove oil...that and it was incredibly messy to filter (considering I only had coffee filters that I could use)).

One of my favorite ways, though, to make oils would be from www.blessedbe.sugarbane.com under Altar Tools: Oils.

Essentially you take some oil and place it in your mortar and pestle with a little bit of herbs. You crush the herbs into the oil, and then place it into a bottle and store it in a dark place for three days. On the fourth day, smell it to see if it's the desired smell.

Repeat this process until you get the smell to be as strong as you like. When it's right...strain it in cheesecloth (I only had coffee filters lmao), and store in a tightly capped, dark glass bottle.

Now, this site says to add a tincture of benzoin as a preservative, but I don't have any benzoin, so I suppose it could be optional, your oil would probably just not last as long.

There are lots of other ways too to make oils, like boiling, but I don't know how to do that. I like simpler ways.

By all means check out other ways to make oils, if anyone finds any other easier ways to make oils, drop me a line here :) :)
