OOoooh...prayer is a finickey thing. I'm of the mindset that prayers are pre-set, pre-written and that's that. Making up my own prayers are foreign for me. It's so intimidating to create my own prayers...and praying to my Goddess merely seemed like a ramble. I'd go on and on about my worries, concerns, praises, etc, and it just seemed like I was talking to myself, as though there were another person there.
However...I'm taking a page from Christianity when it comes to prayer. Once a week, I attend a Christian woman's "Coffee Break" sort of bible study (more of a mother's support group using bible scriptures to emphasize family life...not so much a study of the bible). It's called "Mom-to-Mom" in which young mothers (and some seasonsed) gather to discuss their mothering and wifely lives and give support to each other and go over lessons by the same title...Mom-to-Mom.
Anyways, in this latest "lesson", (we watch a dvd then discuss questions) the host of the dvd described a way of prayer that makes things a little less intimidating, and organizes one's priorities when praying to their deity (in this case, Jesus or their God).
The order is called "ACTS". Now, this is an acronym:
A = Adoration
C = Confession
T = Thanksgiving
S = Supplication (or requests).
I've been making an attempt at using this acronym in my own prayers to my Goddess, and it actually DOES make things a little easier for me...though I can't seem to incorporate the "Confession" part in because I don't always feel guilty (except for my lack of prayers, but that's on me). Because of this, I'm thinking of modifying this acronym to just "ATS" or Adoration, Thanksgiving and Supplication (requests), removing the "C".
If anyone else is having difficulties praying simply because they're intimidated or simply can't think of what to say...try this acronym (either the original or the modification). It might make things easier :)
