44 Days of Witchery: Day 30 - Favorite Witchy/Pagan Movie

I love lots of movies that have Witches in them. Some geared towards their witchyness, some that are not.

Movies that I'll watch again and again would probably have to be Practical Magic, The Craft and The Good Witch series (The Good Witch; The Good Witch's Garden; The Good Witch's Family; The Good Witch's Gift).

I love Practical Magic because, well for one, I'd love to be one of the Aunts, I also love their house, AND their book. But I can understand Sally's need to be disassociated with her "magical" roots, considering living in the town she does, where EVERYONE knows she's a Witch, yet she lives in denial, that can't be easy. Not to mention trying to raise two girls on her own, and establish a business, while no one wants anything to do with her...that's a tremendous feat. It's nice though that she ends up with understanding friends/employees, and in the end (SPOILER ALERT) all those who have shunned her and her family in the past, end up assisting Sally and the Aunts in the rescue of poor Jillian from the Spirit of her dead boyfriend. Eventually, everyone realizes that they aren't as bad as everyone's made them out to be, and even join in the Halloween festivities at their house, where the Witchy family jump off the roof in full Witchy regalia, carrying a black umbrella (I assume so they don't descend to quickly).

As for The Craft...I love it because of the message it can send to people if they're paying enough attention. "You get what you give" and "Absolute power corrupts, absolutely". But when people see or even think of "The Craft"...they think of the fluffy nature of the movie, and think that that's what all Witches think they are. A bunch of rebellious teenage girls dabbling in something they don't understand, OR...dabbling in something that is "known" not to exist (I put "known" in quotations because people naively think they know better).

In all honesty, I just think "The Craft" is good as the fiction it is. I don't base it on any reality (besides, I'd love to have the shop, the girls are always going to).

I love the Good Witch series for the simple fact that it portrays Witches far more accurately than any other movie I've seen so far. It's still fiction, but doesn't portray the "Witch" as working with bubbling potions, cauldrons and herbs galore, nor does it show her using "mystical powers" and getting what she wants right away. I think Catherine Bell does a great job as Cassie, and I always look forward to watching these movies when they come on tv.

There are some other movies I like that have Witches in them, but don't really focus on them...i like the Wizard of Oz...probably the first movie I'd seen where a Witch was portrayed as good, as well as having one that was bad. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was also another movie I enjoyed as a kid. Yet again, I loved the Witch, despite her being bad (and this was the original British version, not the new one they just made, though I do like Tilda Swinton's portrayal of the White Witch in the new version. She's a good actress...good at playing villains (She was really good in "The Beach" and "Constantine")).

Anyways, this is just a tiny sample of the Witchy movies I like. At the moment I can't think of anymore, too many distractions going on around me. I may update later.
