How do you explain how to study Witchcraft to someone who has no idea where to start? I could tell people until Im blue in the face that they should read books, surf the net, search out other Wiccans and/or Witches and enquire about studies, but it doesn't seem like enough.
I didn't have anyone to teach me when I started, so it's difficult for me to direct anyone to sources of information. I didn't have forums or groups I could go to, as when I started, I had just gotten internet for the first time and didn't really know how it worked or how to look for information. I typed in the search engine and found hundreds of sites, some of which now, if I were to look at them then knowing what I know now, I would dismiss as pure fluff, but at that time I didn't know better. I read everything...every site I encountered and eventually stumbled upon WitchSchool. Now some many find this school to be not very good, but I figure if it gets the ball rolling, it can't be all bad. I enrolled in a few classes and (unfortunatly a couple years later, lol) I completed my first degree (it was only supposed to take a year and a day, but from the time I signed up to the time I completed, I had a child and had moved into a new house). It was indeed exciting to finish and learn new things. I continued from there, obtaining a few books on the way.
The first book I ever purchased on Witchcraft was Phyllis Curott's "WitchCrafting". For a beginner, that was actually a tough read for me. The next book I got was "The Complete Idiots Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft". A MUCH easier read for me. It told me the basics in terms I could understand and gave advice. I still refer to that book now and then. I got a couple of more books that were harder to read (but that's the beauty part of trial and error), until I got me a copy of Scott Cunningham's "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner". I couldn't believe how easy this was to read and comprehend. I got through it in about 3 days.
So as you can see it is difficult for me to advise people on how to start other than picking up a book and reading it. I did join a few forums that helped me a little later in my practices (about 5 or so years ago, I have been practicing and studying for about 9 years). One group, one I co-manage now was a BIG help to me. I love this form (you can find the link to it on the sideboard). The people there are SO helpful and so kind, regardless of what one's practices are. Everyone is so curious to understand another's practice that they are eager to find out more. The sad part is that about 2 years ago we split due to MSN closing down groups, and divided when searching for a new home. It was dirty laundry that should have never ended up spilling out into the main forum. But that's ancient history now and the group is going ever strong. I don't think I would know as much as I do if it weren't for this group. They are a beautiful bunch of women (and some men too).
So for those who don't know where to go when starting their path, just start with the basics. Pick up a book. Your best bet would be trying the library as this way you won't buy a book you'll later regret. If you enjoy a book you find there, you can always later buy it. Also don't be afraid of joining forums. They can be a BIG help for questions you can't get answered from a book. Also don't be afraid of online schools (just be weary of paying for lessons. You could be paying big bucks for something you could have learned from a book at the library). Try their free classes first and judge how they go before purchasing any classes. There are endless resources out there to learn from. Also never forget the biggest teacher of all...NATURE. She can teach you so much more than people and books ever could.
Good luck on your journey
